If you’ve ever pulled the dirty water tank out of your robot mop and been hit by a sour, swampy, almost sewage-like smell, you’re not doing anything wrong — it’s just how these tanks work. Dirty mop water is exactly the kind of warm, food-and-grime-rich standing water that bacteria love.
Why every robot vacuum’s dirty water tank smells
It doesn’t matter whether you own a Roborock, Eufy, Dreame, Tineco or Ecovacs — the mechanism is the same:
- The robot mops your floor and pumps the dirty water into the waste tank.
- That water sits there — sometimes for days — between cleaning runs.
- Bacteria multiply in the stagnant, organic-rich water.

The fix (works on any brand)
- Empty after every run, not every week. This is 80% of the battle. Don’t let dirty water sit.

When it’s not the tank
If you’ve cleaned the dirty water tank and the smell is still there, it’s coming from somewhere else — usually the mop pads, the dustbin filter, or the dock. Spray the inside of the dustbin and the underside of the robot with an antibacterial spray and wipe it down — the smell is bacteria, so killing it (rather than just rinsing it around) is what actually works.
