Tineco’s dirty water tanks have a bit of a reputation for getting smelly — partly because the popular Floor One wet-dry vacuums (S5, S7, iFloor) pick up so much gunk, and partly because the tank and brush roller stay damp between uses. Here’s how to fix it.
Why your Tineco dirty water tank smells
Two things are going on:
- The dirty water tank holds everything the machine sucks up — dirty water, hair, food, dust. If that sits in the tank, it ferments and smells fast.
- The brush roller and filter stay wet after cleaning. A damp roller sitting in the tray grows mildew, which is often the real source of a Tineco smell even after you’ve emptied the tank.
How to get the smell out
- Empty the dirty water tank immediately after every use. Don’t leave dirty water sitting overnight — this is the number one cause.
- Rinse the tank thoroughly. Take out the filter/strainer, pull off the lid, and rinse every part under warm water. Tineco tanks have a few removable pieces that trap gunk — get them all.
- Run the self-clean cycle. Most Tineco units have a self-clean mode — run it after each session with clean water, and periodically with a splash of white vinegar to cut bacteria.
- Dry the brush roller and tank. After cleaning, remove the roller and stand it somewhere it can dry fully. Leave the dirty water tank lid off so it air-dries instead of sealing in moisture.
- Replace a smelly roller or filter. Once a roller or filter smells even after washing, it’s done — keep Tineco-compatible replacement rollers and filters on hand. They’re consumables.
- Deodorize by dropping a silver ion pod in the clean water tank, or wiping the tank down with an antibacterial spray.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Tineco dirty water tank smell so bad?
Dirty water, hair and debris sit in the tank between uses and ferment, while the damp brush roller and filter grow mildew. Emptying the tank immediately and drying the roller after every use stops the smell.
How do I get the smell out of my Tineco Floor One dirty water tank?
Empty and fully rinse the tank and all its removable parts after every use, run the self-clean cycle with a splash of white vinegar, and let the roller and tank air-dry with the lid off.
Can I put vinegar in my Tineco?
Yes. Running the self-clean cycle with a little white vinegar in the clean water helps kill the bacteria that cause odors. Avoid foaming soaps and harsh bleach.
My Tineco still smells after cleaning — what now?
The brush roller or filter is probably the culprit. Wash them, dry them fully, and replace them if they still smell — they're consumable parts that don't recover once saturated.
