If your Ecovacs Deebot (T30, X2, T20 Omni and so on) has started giving off a musty or swampy smell when it mops, it’s the same problem that affects every robot mop — and it’s fixable.
Where the Ecovacs smell comes from
There are usually two or three sources stacked on top of each other:
- The dirty water tank — used mop water sits in it, bacteria grow, and it smells when you empty it.
- The mop pads — they stay wet under the robot and in the OMNI station, and damp pads go mildewy.
- The OMNI / auto-empty station — the dock’s dirty water reservoir and mop-washing tray collect the same bacteria out of sight.
How to fix it
- Empty and rinse the dirty water tank after every run. Letting it sit is the main cause of the smell.
- Clean the OMNI station. Empty the dock’s dirty water tank every day or two, and lift out the mop-washing tray to scrub off the brown film that builds up there.
- Dry the mop pads. Peel them off after a run so they can dry, machine-wash them every week or two (no fabric softener), and replace them when they smell even after washing. Keep a set of Ecovacs-compatible replacement mop pads around.
- Deodorize. Add a teaspoon of white vinegar to the tank or drop a silver ion pod in the clean water tank. For a deeper clean, wipe everything down with an antibacterial spray — the smell is bacteria, so actually killing it matters.
- Run a dock self-clean with a splash of white vinegar in the clean water now and then.
Keep it from coming back
Empty both dirty water tanks at the end of every run, let the pads dry between cleans, use filtered water if your tap water is hard, and clean the wash tray weekly. Do that and a Deebot basically never smells.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Ecovacs Deebot smell bad?
Used mop water sits in the dirty water tank and the mop pads stay damp between runs, both growing bacteria and mildew. Emptying the tank after every run and drying the pads stops the smell.
How do I clean a smelly Ecovacs OMNI station?
Empty and rinse the dock's dirty water reservoir every day or two, lift out the mop-washing tray and scrub off the brown film, and run a dock self-clean cycle with a splash of white vinegar.
Can I put vinegar in my Ecovacs robot vacuum?
Yes, a teaspoon of white vinegar in the tank or in the dock's clean water is a safe deodorizer. Avoid foaming soaps and only use bleach heavily diluted.
Why does my Deebot still smell after I cleaned the tank?
It's usually the mop pads or the wash tray. Dry and wash the pads (replace them if they still smell), clean the tray, and wipe everything down with an antibacterial spray.
